SWOC Spring meeting 2016

June 10th 2016 Torbay SWOC meeting report

The Spring SWOC meeting was held in Torbay for the first time in several years, hosted by Shah Punwar (SWOC Honorary Secretary), from the Torbay Hospital Orthopaedic unit. The Grand Hotel on Torquay seafront provided a fitting venue, although the English Riviera weather was somewhat lacking! 70 delegates were treated to over 20 free papers and 5 expert guest speakers from Bristol, Cornwall and Cambridge.

Mike Kelly from the Bristol Major Trauma Centre (pictured below) gave an outstanding guest lecture on current perspectives in Trauma management challenging dogma and provoking debate.

This led us on nicely to the second free paper session where Trauma papers were presented. Nicola Fine’s paper on the ‘ Increased failure rate of the 125 degree cephalomedullary nail’ stimulated many questions from the floor.
As an entertaining, clinically based paper with the potential to change practice, this was a worthy winner of the Best Paper Prize among a very strong field.

The fist SWOC Poster prize was awarded to Tim Woodacre for his paper ‘C2 vertical shear: A new fracture pattern description’.

Special commendations go to Nimesh Patel for his paper ‘A Comparison of Energy Consumption Between The Use Of A Walking Frame, Crutches and a Stride-On Rehabilitation Scooter’ and also JP Evans, who presented two papers of the highest scientific caliber. We wish JP luck with his ‘Best of the Best’ presentation at the BOA Annual Congress in September.

Mez Acharya (North Bristol NHS Trust) presenting a master-class of acetabular defect reconstruction in the setting of revision hip surgery.

Wasim Khan PhD, Senior Clinical Lecturer from Cambridge, gave a cutting edge talk on stem cells and cartilage repair. Although much research work needs to be done before stem cell injections are in routine clinical practice, this may well be the future of arthritis treatment.

Ian Winson (North Bristol NHS Trust), current BOA Vice-President, discussing the Get It Right First Time (GIRFT) BOA initiative.

The final lecture of the day was given by Mr Steve Parsons from The Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro. The title of Mr Parson’s lecture was the ‘History of Arthroscopy in Cornwall’ and the audience were treated to pearls of wisdom from Mr Parson’s vast experience.

A well attended club dinner was held at the Grand following the close of the educational meeting.

The next meeting is planned for November 18th 2016, hosted by Mr Koye Odutola of the Weston General Hospital unit. The venue is the newly rebuilt Grand Pier and we are promised a first class educational meeting, with confirmed guest speakers including Mr Steve Jones (Cardiff), Mr Rob Middleton (Bournemouth) and Mr Andrew Porteous (Bristol).

Thanks go to all members of the Torbay Orthopaedic team who supported the meeting, the excellent staff at The Grand and of course our industry sponsors.
