SWOC Autumn meeting
Mr Jon Mutimer hosted the Autumn 2015 SWOC meeting at Manor by the Lake in Cheltenham on 20th November 2015. The stately location was an excellent venue for both the scientific programme and the evening meal. After an introduction detailing the activities of the similarly named South West Outdoors Club a full educational programme for the day commenced. There were three paper sessions of high quality covering a full breadth of orthopaedics. Overall prize paper was awarded to Mr G Silk for his work ‘Change in Hb, Post operative HB or eGFR which will you choose?’.
Sir Geoff Hurst MBE gave an absorbing talk on ‘How to build a winning team’ and kept a packed room enthralled.
After lunch Sue Smith delivered a hugely enjoyable talk on horseracing injuries and in particular the types of injuries sustained by jockeys. The live action videos drew gasps from the audience and an appreciation of the danger involved in this most exhilarating of sports.
Mr Ben Hickey delivered the Hampson Prize lecture detailing his research into thrombosis following cast immobilization.
Steve Cannon gave the Kenneth Pridie memorial lecture on ‘Pearls and pitfalls of orthopaedic oncology’ followed by an update from the College in his role as Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons. A lively debate ensued about seven day working, consultant contracts and other challenges facing the profession.
The day finished with a drink in the’ hidden bar’ followed by a very well attended evening meal.
Thanks go to Mr Jon Mutimer and the Cheltenham orthopaedic unit for hosting a truly memorable meeting!
